I have come across a self portrait photographer that has done a series of images spanning over the last 11 years based around themes of beauty , identity and body image. Jen Davis is a Brooklyn based photographer who received her MFA from Yale University in 2008, and her BA from Columbia College Chicago in 2002. Shes is or was sightly over weight when she first started creating her larger than life portraits , shes is exploring where over weight females fit in society and whilst doing this it motivated her to loose the weight . Im guessing that's a strong enough sentiment that maybe over weight women don't fit comfortably in media and are they excepted in society? The images are uncomfortable to view . He self consciousness shines though to make this powerful and thought provoking series of images . In my dissertation i want to touch upon similar themes and i think this photographer is a great starting point for a discussion . She started out to explore where over weight women fit in society and ended up going through surgery in order to loose the weight . Does this make he feel like she does fit in society?
