Part A - Photobook 3

I have also noticed that through selecting the photographers from the book to log into my blog that the fashion images really appeal to me too. I have done fashion work in the past and used to see myself becoming a fashion photographer but as the three year course has developed so have i and learning more about photography has edged me more into wanting to do fine art practise/ social documentary . Re looking through this book has in a way rekindled my interest in fashion photography so maybe its time i experiment . The one thing that puts me off fashion though is the clothes , if i was to change my practise to a more fashion direction ,i see myself using the style but not the content . "This seasons must haves" have no effect on me .

Part C - Research for dissertation

I have chosen to do the 50% visual 50% writing option for my dissertation . There is no blog needed for this module and we have been strongly advised to conduct the visual part first and writing later on. I am always finding relevant information for both parts of  the brief so i think this is a great place to begin to collect information . I cant critique anything because of the risk of self plagiarising but if i can just collect links for the things i am looking at i can come back to them at a later date , just initial preparation for something that i feel is one of my weakest modules .

Part C- Elivator Pitch

Well today in groups we learnt about how to construct an elevator pitch. Before today I have never even heard of an elevator pitch but what a great idea it is . Basically its being able to pitch yourself to your desired employer in 30 seconds . The content of what you say needs to be direct and too the point but interesting enough for them to employ you or want to no more about what you have to say . At the moment as my practice stands I don't know who I would like my ideal employer to be so I have aimed my elevator pitch at Rosie miller, my dissertation tutor. I have began by writing bullet point as to what I would like to explore in my dissertation and what I'm interested in as a photographer. Then after I had concentrated my ideas down to valuable bullet points its easier and more direct to talk about . Here are my bullets point on what I would like to talk about the idea behind my dissertation;
  • awkward Portraiture
  • Social documentary
  • Representation of women
  • Twenty first century beauty culture
  • social media platforms influence
  • a conformed sub culture
  • The inside out debate
  • social pressure ,social change
  • Images developing in worth
Now I have developed my bullet points into the important parts of what I would like to talk about I just need to put them in to coherent sentences and I'm ready to pitch .
I pitched to my group and my feedback was really positive . It was short, sweet and too the point . I will be using this technique again and I am also going to start thinking about applying the elevator pitch to other projects i have going on at the moment.

Part A+C Ian Jeffrey 'Photography A Concise History'

Another reading i have set myself is Ian Jeffreys " Photography a concise history". In particularly i find chapter two Instantaneous Pictures most relevant for current projects i have approaching. The chapter is quite dated but its very interesting to read it speaks of the problems and advantages of instantaneity with reference to art, portraiture and topography, after the 1850s. he writes about how " in part the instant was perused because it was attainable, photography’s desire ". but what i found really interesting was how the insanity in photography was slated by high art and almost dismissed from the art word. I feel this is how modern day photographers feel about the mobile phone photographer or could use it in the debate has digital devalued photography. The first instantaneous medium for photography was the stereograph and the British press wrote about it being "stereoscopic trash" and "Proof of vitiated art taste" also an anonymous reviewer for the 5th annual photographic exhibition in London 1858 regretted the recent decline 'To see that noble instrument prostituted as it is by those sentimental "weddings" "christenings", "crinoline" and "ghosts", Is enough to disgust anyone of refined taste".

Although at the moment iv only attempted the second chapter of this book ,i fully intend to read more of it starting next with chapter 5 "Truths beyond Appearances".

Part C+A Laura Mulvey -'Visual and other pleasures'

Laura Mulveys "visual and other pleasures" is as though provoking now as it was when it was written. I started reading it as it was advised for my dissertation but it has ended up influencing the content of my video and the main underpinning for my work. I have carried on reading bits and bobs of the book when i get chance ie ,travelling or before bed because i find the content really interesting and i can already feel it starting to shape my dissertation ideas. Below i have included a Blog post from my video brief Blogger where i go into more detail about what i found interesting and the discussions it has stirred .

Laura Mulvey- Visual and other pleasures.
I have been advised to read up on Laura Mulvey to give my video piece real content . I have already expressed my 'point of view' on 21st century beauty and the need for females to adapt but Laura Mulveys book of essays 'Visual and Other pleasures' has helped me start to get the grasp of the theory's on 'the gaze' particularly The Male gaze. The book contains historical content and was created as apart of a feminist movement. Laura Mulvey is a British feminist film theorist who examines women's roles in both social and film. The collection of essays found in 'Visual and other pleasures' were written between 1971 and 1986 giving the book a documentary style historical content. After reading snippets of the essays on show i found myself comparing what she has written about and relating it to issues now. The male gaze is still in full blaze , women are still dressing to appeal to the opposite sex and also women's still have the need to be gazed at. There is a newish photo craze called "selfies" where people and i would say the majority women take pictures of themselves usually on a camera phone and post them to on line social networking sites. This i feel fits into the gaze because it illustrates the need to be gazed upon. Photography has become so disposable now that people are taking pictures of themselves hourly (in extreme cases). Is this completely devaluing photography as a practised art form or is this just a craze that has come with the development of technology? I for one could not think of a worse pass time than taking photos of myself and posting them publicly , i feel it could leave you venerable. On the other hand many people who might suffer from low self esteem might upload pictures online to receive comments or likes again the need to be gazed upon , admired. But with online "selfies" you are in control of the gaze, you choose with sides of you the public wants to see. The effects of the male gaze idea can be found massively in the advertising industry ,women are used in advertising as a sex symbol to both men and women. Women gaze upon other women wanting to have whatever the model is advertising , wanting to be her. And men gaze well because they are men wanting the sex symbol.
Here is a classic example of wear "the Gaze" comes into advertising . As the models gazes into the camera the second model (the male) is almost pushed way into the background. She is the main feature to be gazed upon, she is also holding the gaze with the viewer. Girls want to be her , guys want to be with her. Which is a quick overview is the point Laura Mulvey is making in her collection of essay 'Visual and other pleasures. Clever to use in advertising , still being practised in modern culture.

Part C -Photographic Law

I have decided for my dissertation its is necessary to photograph children to get across what I will be discussing .I want to discuss the 21st century beauty culture and the effects that could have on younger generations and also the social changes I predict will come along with this .I would like to ideally photograph primary school aged girls applying the extreme amount of make up and "add ons" (i.e.. eyelashes and hair extensions" that are so popular at the moment . I feel like applying this extreme beauty culture to younger girls will have a powerful impact and will slightly unsettling to viewer. Because of this I need to be very careful when it comes to model release forms because there are Laws on photographing children under 18 years old with out parental consent. There is a very negative stigma burdened with photographing children that I am finding very uncomfortable. What I am doing is completely innocent most children have engaged with make up at some point before primary school its just not a regular occurrence so finding models with parents happy to engage to is proving quite difficult but I have had an idea to ask a local dance school whom I have photographed before if they would like to take part in my work . I have organised a meeting with the head of the dance school and I just have to wait for her to become available ,until then I need to get the correct model release forms and any additional information on photographing children under 18 so I am fully prepared.
I have found a fact sheet online that is also followed but a model release form .The fact sheet is stated that it is for guideline use only but I think it was interesting to read ,Why if somebody shows an interest in photographing children that arnt there own are they automatically a pervert , I can understand why its an issue because of some people in the word but I feel its become a taboo subject that im being advised left right and centre to avoid. Well I feel the stigma needs to be confronted and I wont allow it to effect my perfectly innocent work   I will be using the model release form as a starting template for my own at a later date.

Fact sheet

Photographing Children

Please use this fact sheet as a guide only it does not constitute professional legal advice

This fact sheet should be read in conjunction with the fact sheet "Photographing People/ Model releases, which contains general advice on photographing people. This fact sheet sets out special extra considerations when photographing those under 18.

Parental Consent and Model Release Forms

As a general rule photographers should obtain a release when ever possible. If your contributors supply images with a model release, then this expands the possible uses of that image in a commercial environment. It is essential that you consider what the release should cover; advertising, editorial or for use on a website etc. and in which territories.

When shooting children under the age of 18, a model release with the parent or legal guardian's signature should be obtained.

An example of parental consent to be added to your standard with your model release might include the following: I hereby give (name of client/photographer) consent to the use the images(s) made of (name of children) on this date (-------) for all purposes, including those of advertising and trade and indemnify (name of client/photographer) against any claims arising out of any use of the Images.

Using Children as Models in Commercial Photography

According to UK law, a licence is required for all paid commercial photography involving children of school age (under the age of 16). The licence is obtained from the Local Education Authority (LEA) where the child lives. A separate licence for each child involved is needed, and if they live in separate boroughs you need to apply for separate licences to each local authority. Either the photographer or the client can apply for the licence, but not the model or model agency. You should call the LEA to request a form, which will need to be signed by the parent or guardian. Leave plenty of time when applying for a licence (approx. 21 days before your shoot, any longer and you can complain to the Department of Health) note; some boroughs will issue six month licences.

You may also be asked by the Local Education Authority to produce a disclosure certificate. Standard disclosures contain details of all convictions on record, plus details of any cautions, reprimands or warnings. If you are required to provide one. For more information call the disclosure help line 0870 90 90 811 or visit http://www.crb.gov.uk

Protection of Children Act 1978

To comply with the Children’s Act 1978, extra care must be taken when shooting and distributing images of children, especially where innocent nakedness is involved.

The law on images of child abuse is relatively clear. Images of child abuse mean any images of children (under 16 years old) involved in sexual activity or posed to be sexually provocative. Section 1 of the Children Act 1978, as amended by the Criminal Justice and public Order Act 1994, creates various offences of taking or distributing indecent photographs

or pseudo-photographs of a child who is or appears to be under 16 years of age. Further information and details on Scottish Law, please visit: http://www.iwf.org.uk/hotline/uk_law.html
Photography of Children in Sport and Recreation Centres

Taking photographs of children in sports activities, especially in the areas of swimming, gymnastics and athletics, is turning into an increasingly problematic area. Reports of unauthorised children’s images taken whilst using sports facilities, with digital technology like mobile phones and cameras, and being posted on the web are creating serious concerns and increasing the paranoia surrounding this issue.

The Institute of Sport and Recreation Management newly issued guidelines are urging a complete ban on photography where partly clothed children may be present. They suggest that in venues that allowed photography, photographers should request permission to take pictures and guarantee that they will not be put to improper use. Guidelines can be found at:

http://www.isrm.co.uk/information/270_photography_children.pdf

Defamation

If, by use of an image or by captioning you give an untrue impression which might affect the subject’s reputation you could be guilty of defamation.. For example, a photograph of a miserable or bruised child should never be used to illustrate an article about abused children as this would be defamatory of the parents and possibly also the child. The photographer / agency and the parents or guardians must grant permission first and the picture should be used clearly captioned POSED BY MODELS.
Press Complaints Commission Code of Practice

The Press Complaints Commission publishes a Code of Practice which contains useful guidelines for photographing children, see www.pcc.org.uk/cop . These include: i) Young people should be free to complete their time at school without unnecessary intrusion. ii) A child under 16 must not be interviewed or photographed on issues involving their own or another child’s welfare unless a custodial parent or similarly responsible adult consents. iii) Pupils must not be approached or photographed at school without the permission of the school authorities. iv) Minors must not be paid for material involving children’s welfare, nor parents or guardians for material about their children or wards, unless it is clearly in the child's interest. v) Editors must not use the fame, notoriety or position of a parent or guardian as sole justification for publishing details of a child’s private life.

*Children in sex cases

1. The press must not, even if legally free to do so, identify children under 16 who are victims or witnesses in cases involving sex offences. 2. In any press report of a case involving a sexual offence against a child - i) The child must not be identified. ii) The adult may be identified. iii) The word "incest" must not be used where a child victim might be identified. iv) Care must be taken that nothing in the report implies the relationship between the accused and the child.

Part A+C - Susan Sontag On Photography

Well I thought I’d start with reading the classics that comes up in everyday photography discussion. I have been advised on many accounts to read this particular the first chapter so I have done. Well Where do I start with this book, I have read chapter one ‘In Plato cave’ roughly four times now. Every time i re-read it another factor of what Susan Sontag Is ranting about sticks out more. I both agree but mainly disagree with photography and photographers in her words. She is quite arrogant in the way she writes, It is almost instantaneously clear that she dislikes photography and almost writes it off straight away ,she viciously compares photography to the act of shooting (hunting) and rape.
“To photograph people is to violate them, by seeing them as they never see themselves, by having knowledge of them that they can never have; it turns people into objects that can be symbolically possessed. Just as a camera is a sublimation of the gun, to photograph someone is a subliminal murder - a soft murder, appropriate to a sad, frightened time.”
The quote above is ridiculously extreme! I’m not out to violate people when I photograph them neither are most photographers out there.
Although the whole chapter virtually, is written in a negative manner some of her points I agree with she writes that people now need photography in order to realise experiences .This theory of hers is a dated version of what I would like to talk about in my dissertation but now instead of just recording their experiences through the media of photography I would like to discuss peoples need to share bite size chunks of their everyday lives through social media. The constant need to record and share what seems to me like pointless information ie. There dinner at dinner time. Sontag argues that “ A photographed moment is a privileged moment which was chosen for cultural reason”  Reading this makes me want to discuss this but bringing it into the present. Has the accessibility of photography now made everything a privileged moment or is this accessibility of “everybody being a photography” devalued photography to the point a picture of your cheese sandwich for dinner is a “privileged moment” or is what Susan Sontag dated and irrelevant ?
This is most defiantly a book I will be revisiting in the near future I have been advised to read it annually because there is so much content to the book pieces always get missed. I will defiantly be re-visiting and quoting this book for my dissertation research.

Part C- Self Portraiture experiments

As i have already mentioned i am at the very beginning at starting to prepare for my final Major project , i have a lot of ideas at the moment so nothing is refined but one of  my ideas includes self portraiture. I have never even attempted a "selfie" never mind a self portrait ! The famous saying 'face for radio' springs to mind. As an initial idea i want to explore my love of awkward portraiture and i couldn't think of anything more predominately awkward than putting myself in a self portrait scenario. I also have interests photographic relationships ,how people pose themselves in front of the lens and there interaction with on people in the photograph. I decided the best thing to do before refining concepts is experiment with self portraiture and adding others into the frame . It was just a one day experiment and i think that's all i needed to put me well and truly off the idea ,this may sound vain but i cant stand the idea of looking at myself in pictures for a whole project. I just don't work in front of the lens only behind. Also i didn't get my desired effect of awkwardness , i feel us all being awkward about the situation just turned into stupidity on every ones behalf. Oh well that's what test shots are for just disappointed that i bought the remote control before trailing it . On the other hand i feel i could use it for other things, I found removing the photographer from the back of the camera also removes some of the awkwardness , i would like to experiment with this theory further in the near future. I have included a selection of my unedited test shots below.

Part C -Corn Exchange Exhibition

An opportunity has risen for a handful of photographers in our year to exhibit in the corn exchange Manchester . Everyone was given the opportunity but a lot of people have backed out due to bad timing (with his hand in) and other work loads we have going on at this moment but I this this is stupid not to take full advantage of. Its a free pop exhibition in one of the un used shops in the corn exchange shopping centre , Its December so there are going to be loads of people about and its running for a hole month which is great exposure to publicity. Sadly I was unable to attend the first meeting we had in the actual building to pick our space but I have complete trust in my fellow exhibitioners to pick a  great space. They have chosen the old sweet shop because of its size (huge) the lighting is perfect and the fact that its on the bottom floor with windows looking onto the main street to gain public interest .
I thought this would be great experience and practice running a exhibition before our Final major project exhibitions and it really would be silly to miss out on . I have chosen my "emotive dreams" series to exhibit because its a finished polished piece of work that I feel represents me as a photographer. Out of the series of 6 I have chosen to only exhibit 5 because I think odd numbers always look better and i have eliminated the weakest (technically)image of the series . It still makes perfect sense without the 6th image ,im excited to get it started .
Iv sent off for my images to both be printed and mounted. I'm usually a strong believer in taking the time to mount or frame my own work but in this case with our hand ins and limited time iv paid for them to be done professionally . I have paid for my 5 prints to be printed 20x16 inch lustre paper and mounted on 2mm white card. If its mounted professionally it is less likely to peel or alter because likeliness is it will be machine and not hand done . Plus because the exhibition is up for a whole mouth I think its important it maintains a professional aesthetic throughout .
Here are the five images I have chosen .

We have also chosen to do an artists write up that are all matching .Here is mine . Iv tried to keep it short and sweet but with an incite to the theory behind the images and a glimpse of me as a photographer .

We have also decided to have a separate name card with any additional contact information on such as phone numbers and email addresses. It was agreed to have a picture of ourselves on too which I find quite uncomfortable but its a group effort so I have to play into the majority . so here is my Name card .
And last but not least I thought id include the group poster that hopefully we will start to share digitally and print and put up in places of interest, I really looking forward to the opening date but unfortunately its after the hand in for this project so I wont be able to include it in this reflective blog .

Part C- Portfolio Review

Today we had a really important session , portfolios .I have had a portfolio before but it was art based not photography based so i thought it would be interesting to see how a photography portfolio was presented . we were told to bring in what we had so far, so I bought in a selection of potential images that I may like to see in my printed portfolio. Other people bought in portfolio cases with large prints somebody else bought in a wooden box of snap shot sized images but the majority of my group was digital based but intended for print.
The session was really just about the dos and don'ts of putting together our professional portfolios and some of the possible options we have to present our images .There are one in particular that appeal to me which I will go into detail soon . A traditional leather black portfolio doesn't appeal to me really , Although if put together correctly they are beautiful and effect full, I feel like there other ways of show casing my work that may help me stand out . The prints are protected by the crystal clear cases but I don't like the idea of my work being showcases like a book in a particular other. If an potential employer was looking at my work I wouldn't want them to be restricted by ring bound images order by my preference. I feel like holding images can be an experience , I think its important to be able to hold them close , far away and place them next to others ect. I like images as a tangible object ,and this is how I see my portfolio being .
I have heard about a photo box being used as a portfolio instead of the tradition book format and I love the idea. Its a structured cardboard box that protects your prints but each images can be lifted out of the box too be viewed .
I have started to look into pricing one up and ordering one also need to select an edit of images to get printed and start to fill my portfolio box.I found it extremely helpful as i didn't really have a clue before . We have been told we will revisit portfolios at a later date  , I aim to have prints to show by then .

Part A- 'Liberation' The importance of Photography in newsprint

"In their place: a series of empty frames that create a form of silence; an uncomfortable one," Ollier continues. "It's noticeable, information is missing, as if we had become a mute newspaper. [A newspaper] without sound, without this little internal music that accompanies sight."

On the 14th November 2013 the French newspaper Liberation released an issue with absolutely no pictures making a statement for photojournalists everywhere! With the acsess of photography being acsessable to almost everybody currently the need for photojournalists is being cut in many media productions and some published photographers are just be accredited rather than being paid. Especially in news papers street phone photography is being used more and more because it was taken as the event was taking place rather than when the hired photographer could get there.
This edition of the newspaper was in reaction to the news that  the "Chicago sun-times" laid off its entire photography staff and instead they have just trained the reporters to take pictures on there iPhones. This is so sad and as a photographer I feel things like this really devalue the art form . What Liberation have done re-enforces the importance of photographs in media .

Part B - New equipment

As I have mentioned in my personal development table I constructed earlier in the brief the idea of part B ( my equipment) is to ready myself for when I finish university and no longer have all their equipment to lend out . Thinking not so far ahead as leaving university I have my final major project that I am quite interested in doing self portraiture so I have decided to expand my equipment list and invest in a remote control trigger . I feel like even if I decide not to go ahead with the self portraits its a cheap enough investment and there are loads of other projects I could use it in . Just got to wait for itto arrive ad then I can do some self-portrait experiments .

Part B - Experimenting in the studio

As apart of the development I have challenged myself with  perfecting the use of my own equipment I have decided to take my camera into the university studios to experiment. I haven't used the studio since we first stared University and we had a session on how to use the equipment, Its overdue that I refresh my memory and try again. I decided to go into the studio with James Owen, Tuesday Amber and Becky Fernley who all felt the same as me, needing a refresher. I was actually surprised at how much we could all remember and how the positive the session turned out to be . I now after just experimenting feel loads more confident that I am capable to take a client into a studio and control the environment around me . As you can see by the images I have uploaded below that we had placed a subject to photograph in the middle of the backdrop then just moved the lights around adding and taking away lights and just looked at the out come. We experimented with back lighting out subject to get the desired Shallotte look , One side lighting to create shadow on the subjects face and also adding more than on person into the frame to see how difficult light two or more people could be. Conducting these experiments has also made me realise how much I enjoy studio work and challenging myself with different lighting scenarios. I aim to not leave it as long next time for a refresher and start using the studios more regularly .
