So this page is actually going to be me getting my head around post graduate education and what it all means. I hear the words masters , PHD and PGCE flying around here there and everywhere this year and i must admit Im not entirely sure what it all entails.I have looked at the Salford University website to see if it can shine anymore light on the situation .
So from viewing the website there seems to be two types of post graduate degrees Taught and research based as explained below.
Postgraduate taught degrees
Accelerate your career
A postgraduate taught course offers you the ideal chance to specialise in a particular field and gain a qualification that can enhance your employment prospects and professional development. In fact 94% of our postgraduates go on to employment and/or further study within six months of graduating (Destinations of Leavers from Higher Education (DLHE) survey 2009 and 2010).
THERE MUST BE HOPE FOR ME YET !!
Research degrees
Research study at Salford
Salford is a research-driven university, using innovation and creativity to find solutions to ‘real-world’ problems. Our multi-disciplinary research environment is recognised nationally and around the world.
Our research is grouped around our
research centres, the centres cover areas under our four strategic interdisciplinary research themes;
Built Environment,
Energy,
Health & Wellbeing,
Media, Digital Technology and the Creative Economy. Please use the
Research Centre search box for a list of our research centres and find out more about the research that is currently being undertaken.
- 83% of our research was rated as 'internationally recognised' in the last Government Research Assessment Exercise (RAE 2008)
- Our practical, solutions-driven research is focused on benefiting industry and government
- We offer a number of Graduate Teaching Studentships for suitably qualified candidates wishing to study for a PhD
- You can choose from a wide range of flexible study options, including the opportunity to spend part of your research time studying abroad
- Annual Salford postgraduate research conference offering the chance for researchers from all disciplines to exchange ideas and share research practices
We offer research degrees that can be studied full-time, part-time and by distance learning.
It gives me comfort to realize that there is much more flexibility in postgraduate degrees for example , you can pick to study full or part time and also they seem much more persific . The idea of a research based post graduate degree appeals to me greatly but i think i would develop more in a taught environment where i don't have as much scope as if it was just research based ! Another question i have about further education is funding.
This was what the Salford university website had to offer me for now but you can go into more details when you have found a coarse that interests you . I want to look at what Salford can offer me in the form of a creative degree ,i know my postgraduate study doesn't have to be solely on photography and you can develop your major .
Fees and funding
As a postgraduate student you will need to pay annual tuition fees to the University for the taught course or research degree you are studying. This covers the cost of your tuition, examinations and graduation.
The fees for our taught courses vary from course to course so for individual taught course fees please use our Course Finder search and see the Fees and Funding tab.
We offer fee discounts and funding opportunities to help you study, find out more about what we have on offer for research and taught study by following the links below.
What do salford have to offer me then ?
I have navigated around Salford University's website to try and find both taught and research based postgraduate degrees of interest to me . I have used the convenient "Find a course" options bar . I have selected Post graduate and key words photography . It appears that there are no purely photography based post graduate corses i can do at salford but here is a few degrees that came up on the search ....

The majority of our graduates continue with their creative careers. Graduates are particularly visible in the region – in group studios, exhibitions or events. Many graduates support their practice via teaching or demonstrator roles in further or higher education establishments. A number of graduates find work with museums or galleries. Our graduates are particularly proactive in initiating art-based projects – establishing new venues and curating group exhibitions, for example. A number are successful each year in securing artist residencies at home and abroad.
